Overview:
We are seeking an R&D Associate to advance science and technology in the areas of electrochemical energy storage including battery recycling and manufacturing among other battery R&D duties. Selection will be based on qualifications, relevant experience, skills, and education. You are expected to develop and execute research projects on advanced battery manufacturing, recycling, and supply chain.
You should have demonstrated records of technical accomplishments in 1) battery materials processing, recycling, and manufacturing, and 2) electrode materials synthesis, characterization, and performance evaluation. These research areas are aligned with U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Vehicle Technologies and other DOE programs.
This R&D Associate position is in the Electrification and Energy Infrastructure Division, and research will primarily be conducted at ORNL’s Grid Research, Integration & Deployment Facility (GRID). You will collaborate with staff across ORNL and will be expected to communicate at conferences and project review meetings and interface with scientists at other national labs, industry, and universities.
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
- Research and develop advanced battery recycling technologies.
- Carry out works on the synthesis of novel nano- and bulk functional materials.
- Conduct works on the characterization of materials and interfaces.
- Perform tasks related to battery manufacturing.
- Exploit new opportunities and/or expand existing efforts.
- Advance the reputation and standing of the group through establishing collaborations, professional society leadership and involvement, and organization of technical events.
- Write, develop, and review technical products such as proposals, publications, and artifacts to ensure high quality and consistency with ORNL standards.
- Ensure safe, collegial, and collaborative workplace.

Basic Qualifications:
- A PhD in materials science, chemical engineering, chemistry, electrochemistry, or a relevant degree with a minimum of 2 years of work experience in electrochemical energy storage.
- A record of excellence in battery research and development as evidenced through peer-reviewed journal articles and/or issued patents.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
- Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.
Special Requirements:
This is a temporary 24-month position. The appointment length will be up to 24 months with the potential for extension. Initial appointments and extensions are subject to performance and availability of funding.
