Overview:    

We are seeking a Project Manager who will focus on project support for the neutron scattering program at the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR), including key aspects of the HFIR Beryllium Reflector Replacement (HBRR) Project as well as other operations-specific development projects within the Neutron Scattering Division (NSD). 

 

This position resides in the HFIR Beamline Operations Section, Neutron Scattering Division, Neutron Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

Major Duties/Responsibilities:   

  • In coordination with HFIR Upgrades Project Office leadership and HFIR Operations, effectively lead the planning and support of a subset of HBRR project activities, including: 

    • Providing data for project planning, scheduling and cost estimation for responsible systems. 

    • Helping to manage project risks change proposals, and action items related to responsible systems. 

    • Ensuring accurate system oversight and approval by appropriate design and work authorities, per applicable standards, policies, and procedures. 

    • Working with other project leaders to ensure all work and interfaces are identified and well defined within the scope of the project. 

  • Collaborate to provide the effort and materials needed for instrument disassembly, waste, storage and equipment tracking in the HFIR Beam Room, Experiment Room, and Cold Guide Hall. 

  • Provide the necessary resources and materials to set up labs, workspaces, and sample shops.  

  • Support the relocation and installation of new electrical supplies, air handling systems, and other utilities. 

  • Facilitate the planning and execution of other special projects as needed.

Basic Qualifications: 

  • A BS degree in project management, engineering, chemistry, physics or related field.  

  • At least 5 years of experience successfully performing project management duties with technical engineering or scientific projects. 

  • Strong written and verbal communications skills, ability to successfully interact with DOE, project reviewers, project staff members and senior laboratory management. 

  • Demonstrated experience managing diverse, high performing teams. 

 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • An MS degree in relevant field.  

  • Project Management Professional (or equivalent) certification. 

  • Technical experience working with neutron scattering instruments particularly at HFIR or SNS. 

  • Record of successful execution of large and complex maintenance activities, particularly at ORNL or within the DOE complex.

Special Requirements:  

This position requires access to technology that is subject to export control requirements. Successful candidates must be qualified for such access without an export control license.
